The Middle School Learning Environment
Middle School Learning

John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School implemented a middle school structure in 2000, with the inclusion of Year 7 students from its primary and associated feeder schools on to the Mirrabooka Campus.  A purpose built Year Seven Suite was constructed allowing for the development of a Year Seven Learning Community.  This building has catered for the unique needs of adolescent students in Year 7, particularly fostering the important aspect of relationships and community which have a great influence on students in early adolescence.
The Years 8 and 9 Middle School wing caters for the educational and social needs of 384 students facilitated by a Middle School team comprising 18 teachers, six in each of Years 7, 8 and 9. See picture above. The Middle School wing includes 12 classrooms where four Learning Communities (two each in Years eight and nine) have been formed.  The Middle School wing also includes a ‘learning street’ where integrated programs and informal social interactions between staff and students are encouraged and initiated.  A staff preparation area that caters for the requirements of 12 staff complements an interview room and staff meeting room.

Three entrances open onto a wide, light-filled Learning Street (below) which contains student lockers, comfortable chairs and a food preparation area. Classrooms, all equipped with SmartBoards. open off this area. A staff preparation area opens off the main entrance foyer.

On the south side the modern exterior opens onto the campus' central recreation area, Carnley Court. The Middle School building has easy access to the library, ICT Centre and canteen.
