ST PAUL’S CHAPEL CHOIR

St Paul’s Chapel Choir is made up of students and staff from John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School. Formed less than five years ago, the choir has toured the United Kingdom, the eastern states of Australia, and this state’s south-west, performed with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and produced recordings of Haydn’s orchestral mass, Missa Sancti Nicolai, and the Fauré Requiem. The Chapel Choir sings the traditional Anglican office of Evensong each Tuesday and also a full sung Eucharist every Sunday morning at St Paul’s, Mirrabooka. The fourth Sunday of the month sees the choir singing in Anglican parishes around the Perth diocese. In 2011 the choir performed with the WA Symphony Orchestra in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Perth Concert Hall with the choristers forming the ragazzi choir. On the 10th anniversary of September 11, the Chapel Choir gave a concert performance of the Duruflé Requiem. Neville Cohn reviewed the concert in The West Australian as “a profoundly meaningful –and very moving– contribution to the day… I cannot too highly praise the singing of St Paul’s Chapel Choir. Recently returned from a concert tour of Britain, where it sang at inter alia, Bath Abbey, Lincoln Cathedral and St George’s Chapel, Windsor, these finely trained singers responded to Durufle’s masterpiece with admirable discipline and beauty of tone.” (Neville Cohn, The West Australian, 12 September 2011) In July 2011, the choir toured the UK, singing at Bath Abbey, Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, Lincoln Cathedral, St George’s Chapel, Windsor and the Blue Coat School in Liverpool. Last month, the choir toured Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Wangaratta and performed at St Paul’s Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, St James’ King Street, Christ Church St Laurence and the Great Hall, Parliament House. The choir was awarded First place in three choir categories (including the Open Choirs) at the Fremantle Eisteddfod in 2013. It has won the Open section for three years running. Last year, the Chapel Choir participated in a master-class with Dr Jenevora Williams, singing teacher for the choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral London UK, who had this to say of their singing: “The young singers were extremely responsive and professional in the rehearsal. The sound they made was every bit as good as the best Cathedral Choristers in the UK.” The director of the Chapel Choir is Mr Jamil Osman and the organist is Mr Jonathan Bradley.
