The vital role played by drama study in a child’s development and education is well known, and our Drama department is an established and integral part of school life.

Drama is an integral part of the JSRACS Co-Curricular Programs, catering for singers, actors and backstage technicians from Primary School through to Year 12.  Our aim is to fully develop a student’s talents and skills, by encouraging each student to take part in the preparation and performance of School productions.

The program is designed to enrich, extend, develop confidence and accelerate your child’s learning. Performance is a key component of the program and your child will have the opportunity to perform in front of a variety of audiences, including in our much anticipated annual Drama and Musical productions and the annual Interhouse Theatre sports competition.

Drama also teaches important life lessons: participation in a play demonstrates the value of teamwork, helps to develop leadership skills, and shows the importance of working as part of a group, not only supporting but relying on the support of others.

Drama studies also provide a stage for more subtle strengths to emerge. These include physical and verbal communication skills, spatial awareness, the use of gesture, movement, voice, diction and language. Senior students attend a biannual drama trip to Melbourne working in conjunction with The Melbourne Theatre Company to further enhance their studies of Drama.

Being on stage in front of an audience helps to teach students important lessons in self-confidence, as well as helping them to become comfortable with public speaking.

Students are encouraged to contribute backstage, through involvement with set and costume design.

These aspects of our drama program provide all our students with opportunities for their creativity to flourish and allow their imagination to take flight, where every student has the chance to enhance their creative talents and to cultivate their imagination, creativity and expressive skills.
