JSRACS Basketball had a great start to our 2020 campaign with some amazing results in NWAS and ACC competitions. We also had a focused and dedicated approach to our Basketball Program classes and our Student Athletes came back from their holidays ready to work hard and improve on all facets of their game. It was exciting coming back to School on day 1 knowing that JSRACS Basketball is thriving and that our students were locked in and ready to work hard from the get-go. With new uniforms for all of our Basketball Teams, all teams looked like a professional outfit and the school was buzzing with anticipation for the year ahead. Please see a summary of our achievements to date in the field of Basketball.
With our specialist program expanding to include another year group in 2020, it was great to see our students with a mindset to push themselves and improve in every facet of their game. A special welcome to our new students who have come to our school to join the JSRACS Basketball Program. It is pleasing to see our crop of young players boosted by new talent and due to their friendly and outgoing nature, it has been a seamless transition into JSRACS both on and off the court. I have been impressed by the work ethic shown by our Basketball Program students and the energy they bring to each and every session has made it a pleasure to coach. With a focus on improving individual skill sets, I have already seen a marked improvement across the board in 2020 which is very inspiring from a coaching perspective. The future is bright for our student athletes and I urge them to stay focused, experiment with their game and continue to push themselves as we move into the next phase of our program. With so many exciting opportunities in the pipeline, there is a lot to look forward to for all involved in JSR Basketball.
ACC Junior Boys
We ventured into the unknown in 2020 with the beginning of the new Year 7-9 ACC Junior Competitions. Our Junior Boys ACC team made up of talented WABL players made an emphatic start to their JSR Basketball debuts. They opened their campaign with an enormous win over Quinns Baptist College 87-26, then backed this up the following week with a 61-14 win over Mundaring Christian College. It is fair to say they are a force to be reckoned with and were going to be a very tough team to beat by any school in Western Australia, not just the ACC.
ACC Junior Girls
Our Junior Girls ACC held their competition at a one-day Carnival at Warwick Stadium in week 4. It was great to see the girls raring to go for this tournament. With new additions to the squad in Yara Kalogeracos and Georgia Edwards the JSRACS Girls were going to take some beating. We started the tournament with two great wins over Emmanuel Christian and St Brigid’s. We then faced a tough Mercedes outfit which got us in a tight contest 28-25 which ended our Junior Girls ACC campaign. This was the best Junior Girls results we have ever had at JSRACS and I was very proud of the girls in the way they played, improved and conducted themselves throughout the day.
ACC Senior Girls
The Senior Girls ACC team came into the season with a brand new and athletic lineup in 2020. It was great to see their enthusiastic approach to games and there was a sense of excitement around the playing group. They began stylishly with a strong home win over Quinns Baptist College 57-18. Jasmine Bowman and Charlie Thomas had a field day shooting and JSRACS were way too good as a unit in this game. The girls then faced Mundaring Christian College in what was a hard-fought contest in our gymnasium. JSRACS took the chocolates with a 42-22 win and once hit the lead took control of this game. The girls were excited to take on arch-rivals Kingsway and close neighbours St Andrews in their remaining games but as we know the competition was sadly suspended at this time.
ACC Senior Boys
Bringing back the same team that made the Elite 8 in 2019 was a very exciting proposition for me as the Coach of this very talented basketball team. With all players returning along with the addition of James Melville who missed last season with a knee injury, there was a lot of hype around the squad and what we could achieve in 2020. The Senior Boys started their campaign with a big win at home against Mater Dei 75-26. Cameron set the tone on defence and Aluth was impressive in the win. Riley shot the ball at a very high clip in this game notching a team high in points. We then set our sights on Quinns Baptist who would still be having nightmares about playing us in basketball as the boys demolished them with a 96-30 scoreline. Michael was enormous at both ends of the court and Jett showed off his shooting range. James, as usual, was our glue guy in this game, doing all the things the team needed to get the win. We then travelled the Mundaring Christian College to take on the Mustangs. It was a long bus ride and a hot day but this did not deter us from coming home with a sound victory. The final score was 87-50 and we took away a lot of things we wanted to improve on from this game. Our Senior Boys were 3 and 0 at the time this competition halted and as a group, we were excited and optimistic of our chances of taking out this ACC Competition.
With an extra team competing in the NWAS for 2020, it really has shown what a booming sport basketball is at our school. All NWAS teams were coached by specialists in 2020 and we thank those external coaches for their dedication and commitment to JSRACS Basketball.
The Year 7/8 Boys and girls commenced the year positively with record numbers attending trials for these teams. It was fantastic to see the so many eager young faces on the court and it was a tough job selecting teams. Both teams gave it their all in the few games played with the girls going down in a few tight contests and our boys wrapping up with a 2 and 1 record.
The Year 9/10 NWAS teams also boasted large numbers at tryouts and we were lucky enough to enter two boy’s teams in this competition due to a school not entering a team for the season. Both Boys teams played very well in the games played to date, with some huge wins posted by our NWAS1 team. It could have potentially been an all JSRACS Final which would have been an amazing achievement for us a school.
Our Year 9/10 Girls were also very successful wrapping up undefeated. They showed amazing poise in their contests often coming back from half time deficits. Once again, this is the best results we have seen for this age group to date and the girls should be very proud of what they achieved.
It has been a bittersweet end to the basketball season in 2020. With so many achievements to celebrate yet being very saddened to see deflated young athletes devastated by the news that their immediate basketball journeys have come to a sudden halt. Our Basketball family is strong at JSRACS and we will get through these tough times as a community. I have no doubt we will come back stronger and hungrier than ever and I encourage all our Basketballers to use this time to stay fit, healthy and do what they can to work on their individual skill sets from home. Use the individual workout packages that I have sent you all and make this an opportunity to develop some of your weaknesses as a player. Stay safe and support each other and my prayers go out to all families during this testing time.
