Cadets

JSR is one of only a few WA schools offering the River Rangers Cadet program for Years 5 and 6 students. The program engages students in protecting local rivers by exploring real environmental issues, empowering them to make positive changes and share their projects with the wider community.

The Bush Ranger Cadet program, overseen by DBCA, builds leadership, teamwork and outdoor skills for students. Cadets learn to work safely in the outdoors, use field radios, study wildlife and develop bushcraft and survival skills. The program includes drills, partnerships with conservation groups, weekend camps and adventure activities such as climbing, canoeing, archery and camping.

 Fun activities are part of the program and include rock climbing, abseiling, raft building, canoeing, archery, orienteering, cycling and camping.

The Emergency Service Cadet program is overseen by the Department of Fire & Emergency Services (DFES).  The cadets work in partnership with Malaga Fire station and Stirling SES and learn to understanding the nature of fire, its effects and how to prevent and fight fires.  The use of firefighting equipment is studied, including how to safely use fire extinguishers.  

Bush craft and survival skills are an important part of the program.  Drill is part of the program as well as developing leadership and team building skills.

The cadets participate in two weekend camps in Terms , 2 and 3. They have a 7-day camp in the second week of the July school holidays.  

Fun activities are part of the program and include rock climbing, abseiling, raft building, canoeing, navigation, snorkelling and camping.
