Specialist Dance Program
About the Program
The aim is to develop versatile dancers through training in a range of genres, including contemporary, jazz, hip hop and ballet. With a strong focus on technique, performance and choreography, students are challenged to grow as confident, creative artists.
The Specialist Year 9 Dance Program has been designed to support students who have a passion for Dance and a desire to develop their technique and performance levels.
Program Structure
Students combine academic studies with specialised dance training built into their timetable, while committing to the program's values and expectations.
Year 9 students receive 3–4 hours per week of specialist classes, to develop technique, strength, flexibility and performance quality. Students explore choreographic skills, including devising, structuring movement, musicality and creative expression, while also building knowledge in safe dance practice, conditioning, and injury prevention. Opportunities for leadership and collaboration are embedded throughout the course.
Students also work with guest choreographers and industry professionals, gaining insight into current practices and building valuable connections within the dance and performing arts industry.
As a JSR dancer, students are expected to fully engage in all sessions, maintain academic standards, and represent the program with professionalism and commitment.
Performance Opportunities
Students perform in a range of school and community events, showcases and competitions. They also have opportunities to present original choreography and collaborate on group works across different styles.
Future Pathways
Students may pursue pathways including:
- Specialist dance courses (upper school)
- Tertiary dance and performing arts study
- Community and professional dance projects
- Choreography and creative industries
Auditions for the Program
Auditions for the 2027 Specialist Dance Program will be held on 4 June in the JSR Dance Studio. Auditions are open to all current Year 8 students who both attend or are interested in attending JSR.

Dance Scholarships
JSR offers up to 5 scholarships each year for students entering Year 9 and joining the Specialist Dance Program.
Scholarships for successful applicants will continue from commencement through to graduation, supporting students and families across their secondary school journey while enabling talented players to thrive both academically and athletically.
FAQ's
If I enrol at JSR will I automatically gain access to the Specialist Dance Program?
No - the only way to access the JSR Dance Program is via an audition, along with acceptance into the school, via an application and interview with the Principal.
What is the process to apply for a Dance Scholarship at JSR?
Our preference is that you apply for a scholarship, prior to enrolling at JSR. The process is as follows:
- Complete the JSR Dance Scholarship application.
- Register and attend an audition for the JSR Dance Program (where your dance techniques will be assessed)
- Interview with the Principal (where a recommendation from a dance perspective will be provided to the Principal by our Head of Department - Performing Arts)
The Principal takes a holistic approach to Dance Scholarships. Academic achievement, teacher feedback and references will be taken into account when assessing a scholarship application.
What Dance experience do I need to have to be considered for a JSR Dance Program
As scholarships are highly competitive, we expect dancers to have an extensive portfolio of experience and have several years of experience.
