St Paul's Chapel Choir
Our Program
The St Paul’s Chapel Choir (est. 2009) is one of the flagship music programs at John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School (JSR). Comprising up to 52 choristers from Years 4–12, the Choir is a vibrant and welcoming community of young musicians and teachers who share a love of music, learning and worship.
As the only liturgical choir in Western Australia to train both boys and girls, the Chapel Choir offers a unique opportunity for students to receive outstanding musical training while participating in the rich worship life of the School and the wider Anglican community.
Joining the Choir
Most choristers join in Year 4, although entry points can vary and enquiries are welcomed throughout the year.
Students in Year 4 participate in our Probationer Programme, an introduction programme designed to help younger children gradually adapt to choir life. This progra provides valuable musical foundations and an insight into the chorister experience.
A Rich Musical Experience
The Chapel Choir sings regularly throughout the school term and plays a central role in School worship and special events. Choristers rehearse before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, as well as on Monday afternoons.
In addition to rehearsals, choristers receive expert vocal training. Primary School students participate in group singing lessons, while Secondary School choristers receive individual tuition to further develop their vocal skills and musical confidence.
Throughout the year, the Choir sings at weekly services including Evensong and Eucharist, and occasionally visits other parishes across Perth, including St George’s Cathedral in the city. Choristers also enjoy opportunities to participate in recordings, tours, festivals and special performances.
The Choir performs an extensive repertoire spanning over 500 years of music, from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary works, giving students a broad and enriching musical education.
Why Become a Chorister?
Being a chorister is about much more than learning to sing.
Choristers receive exceptional musical training and enjoy experiences that few young musicians encounter. Alongside developing strong musicianship, they learn valuable life skills that benefit them well beyond their school years.
As members of a close-knit team, choristers develop:

Many former choristers have gone on to become successful musicians, educators and leaders within the arts and wider community.
The programme also provides opportunities for spiritual growth through active participation in the worship life of the School. Choristers develop a deeper understanding of the Christian faith while contributing meaningfully to services and celebrations.
Perhaps most importantly, choristers form lasting friendships, become part of a supportive community and create memories that last a lifetime.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for enthusiastic young people who enjoy singing and are excited to learn.
Previous musical experience is not essential. While a clear singing voice, a good musical ear and an interest in music are helpful, we are primarily looking for potential, commitment and a willingness to participate fully in choir life.
Many children possess natural singing ability that has not yet been discovered or developed. Our audition process is designed to identify potential rather than polished performance skills.
Most importantly, we want children who genuinely enjoy singing and who will thrive as part of a supportive and dedicated team.
The encouragement and support of parents and families are also an important part of a chorister's journey. While the programme requires commitment, the rewards—musical, educational, social and personal—are truly exceptional.
How to Apply
Enquiries are welcome from students aged 7–13.
There is no formal closing date for applications; however, places are limited, and we encourage families to make contact as early as possible during the school year.
