Dance at JSR: A Legacy and a New Beginning

Dance is a powerful form of expression that transcends language, culture and background. It brings people together, reflects who we are, and, at its best, inspires change.

Our Dance program has been doing just that for more than 21 years. Over two decades, it has nurtured the passion, creativity and confidence of countless students, providing a space where they are encouraged to explore, grow and shine.

What began as a thriving Primary program steadily expanded into the Secondary years, with the introduction of Dance classes in Years 8–10. Students enthusiastically embraced opportunities to perform in events such as Wakakirri and the Rock Eisteddfod, building both skill and confidence. Today, Dance at JSR is a vibrant, full pathway subject, with students studying through to Year 12 in both ATAR and General courses.

Each year, our much-anticipated Dance Showcase brings together more than 100 students, highlighting the remarkable talent, dedication and artistry of our young performers. For some, this journey continues beyond school, with graduates pursuing further study and careers at leading institutions including Brent Street (Sydney), Dance Force (Gold Coast), NIDA and The Joffrey Ballet School in New York.

The strength of our program lies in the passion and expertise of our teachers, all graduates of WAAPA, who bring high expectations, industry knowledge and a deep commitment to every student. Their guidance, combined with the important role the Arts play in our school community, has paved the way for an exciting new chapter.

In 2027, JSR will launch its Specialist Dance Program, welcoming its first Year 9 cohort. This program has been thoughtfully designed to support students’ development not only as dancers, but as confident, capable young people. Through dance, students strengthen literacy and critical thinking, enhance physical development, and build resilience, self-expression and a strong sense of belonging.

Entry into the Specialist Program is by audition, ensuring that successful students join a community of like-minded peers who share a passion for dance and a commitment to growth. With training across contemporary, jazz, hip hop and ballet — and a strong focus on technique, performance and choreography — students will be both challenged and inspired to reach their full potential.

We look forward to welcoming the next generation of dancers as they take their first steps in this exciting new program.
