Basketball Scholarships
About the Program
Basketball at JSR continues to grow in strength and reputation, with consistent success across the Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) and Champion Schools competitions. Our commitment to excellence in basketball is reflected in the evolution of our Elite Basketball Program, first introduced for Year 9 students in 2019 and now offered across all secondary year levels.
The program is designed for motivated students passionate about basketball and with the potential to perform at an elite level. Integrated into the school timetable, it complements the school’s holistic approach to education by developing not only physical performance, but also teamwork, resilience and leadership.
Through specialist individual and team coaching, students refine their technical skills, deepen their understanding of the game and develop the tactical awareness required to compete at the highest levels. High-performance training in fitness, speed and agility supports students to reach their personal best, while fostering confidence, discipline and a strong sense of belonging within the JSR basketball community.
Basketball Scholarships
JSR offers 10 basketball scholarships each year for students entering secondary school:
- Five scholarships for students commencing Year 7
- Five scholarships for new students entering Years 8 to 11
Scholarships for successful applicants will continue from commencement through to graduation, supporting students and families across their secondary school journey while enabling talented players to thrive both academically and athletically.
Trials for the Program
Trials for the 2027 JSRACS Basketball Program will be held on Saturday, 2 May in the JSR Gymnasium, commencing at 9.00am.
These trials are for any prospective students in Years 6 – 10 who either attend JSR or another school and wish to be part of the Elite Basketball Program in 2027. Students currently attending JSR will be trialled during Term 1. Students already in the Program are not required to attend this trial.
Students applying for the scholarship are required to participate in a Basketball trial alongside other applicants and students from JSR who are aiming to join the Basketball Program.

FAQ's
If I enrol at JSR will I automatically gain access to the Basketball Program?
No - the only way to access the JSR Basketball Program is via a trial, along with acceptance into the school, via an application and interview with the Principal.
If I am accepted into the Basketball Program, does this mean I am automatically placed into a JSR Basketball team?
The Basketball Program (Class) and our teams are separate entities. If you are accepted into the Basketball Program, you are placed into the Program class for your age group/year group. There are trials for all of our JSR Basketball teams (squads are made to select these teams from our Basketball Program classes) from our training squads, teams are selected to represented JSR Basketball for our ACC/NEAS seasons.
What is the process to apply for a Basketball Scholarship at JSR?
Our preference is that you apply for a scholarship, prior to enrolling at JSR. The process is as follows:
- Complete the JSR Basketball Scholarship application found on our school website (attach link)
- A trial for the JSR Basketball Program (where your basketball ability will be assessed)
- Interview with the Principal (where a recommendation from a basketball perspective will be provided to the Principal by our Director of Basketball)
The Principal takes a holistic approach to Basketball Scholarships. Academic achievement, teacher feedback and references will be taken into account when assessing a scholarship application.
What level of Basketball do I need to be playing to be considered for a JSR Basketball Scholarship
As scholarships are highly competitive, we expect athletes to be playing in Division 1 WABL (Championship division) or higher (be a State or National representative) to be considered.
However, if you play Division 2 or lower WABL, you can still apply.We look at applications on a case by case basis and also take into account potential or other characteristics that add value to our Basketball Program and the School.
